Barbara Kruger is a post modern artist. One reason why is that most and nearly all of her artwork comprises of text and image. By her doing this she proliferates a message that offeres a meaning to the whole world. Another aspect she uese is juxaposition. She takes and image of another source and adds a text to it. The image and text then either contrasst or compares to each other, but in doing so a meaning is express. In response to the stradegty she uses; there is commercializing message to it and thats what postmodern artist usually portray. So to sum this all up, Babara Kruger uses aspects that are postmodern, thus making her a post modern artist.

Barbara Kruger was born on Januray 26, 1945 in Newark, New Jersey.  One reason why I chose this artist was, becasue this artist expresses many of her artwork by using juxaposition of text and image. This artists finds existing images of other sources and adds her on text to proclaim a meaning that usually involves identity, sexuality, and power. She is a conceptual artist, which means her artwork is an expression of ideas.  She is an artist of true thinking rather than pure beauty, thus in my opinion being a true postmodern artist. She will always continue to live by her word. "I work with pictures and words because they have the ability to determine who we are and who we aren't".

This piece of artwork is a stereotype on Jewish people. One aspects of this artwork being stereotypical is that the skull on the figure’s hat depicts the calamity many people believed the Jews caused. Every major plague since the Roman Empire many people have blamed Jews for the cause of it. Another calamity the skulls depict is the suffering of the German people. Yes the Germans did persecute the Jews, but many Germans after WW1 blamed the Jews for the loss say in that the German army was "stabbed in the back" by the Jewish men and women that served within their army. After the war the Germans signed the Treaty of Versailles, which established reduction upon the land, as the majority of Germany now were ruled by foreigners, though the German people was stilled the majority of the population. They even accused the Jews as being greedy capitalists that led Germany to fall into the Great Depression. The strip of paper on the figure says "Gaza". This goes directly in link to the skulls as today many the region of Gaza has seen many conflict between the Israelis (Jews) and the Palestinians. The war within that region is religious and territory purposes. Many anti- Semitists has blames the Jews for such hostility within that region ever since they signed 1949 Armistice Agreement, because of the presence there. So, to sum this cartoon is to spread the anti- Semitism propaganda, by promoting stereotypes that the Jews are the main reason for cataclysmic events in the past century. I feel though these followers are plain belligerent, because of their racists thoughts. These events cannot be blamed solely on the Jews, as many people anti- Semitism are the main causes in these events as they gave the world a reason to hate Jews and a reason for Hitler to rise to power. Thus, do the evil acts he did.

Andy Warhol

This artwork may be describing the cult of celebrity, which is a term that describes how the world through global proliferation views the fame of certain individual. In this case it usually for a short period of time and that nobody fame will last forever.  This text may portray a message that also describes how through many different mediums anyone can become famous, since the text use the word “everybody”. The artwork uses several visual Postmodern Visual Strategies. One is “text and image”, because the artist denotes the meaning with combination of the two. The artist uses another Postmodern Visual Strategies, which is called “representi’n”. The artist displays a picture in the background that portrays a man wearing sunglasses, who seems to be exerting a cool and arrogant attitude. Many will look at that image and think to themselves that this person is popular and well known. Thus expressing they he may be famous.

The first quarter of art has rather been a truly remarkable experience. I first came into this class not knowing anything of art and how it can truly be used, due to the fact that was my first time ever having art as class. Now too truly be honest with you I did not want art as a class. I would rather have music, just for the fact that I think its better and I taken music all throughout grammar school. As weeks went by within this quarter I then started to realize that this is actually a great class and that music and art are similar in many ways. I learned that art came with a foundation or basis and was just not so person with no mind creating visual expression. The basis of art is through its elements and principles. Every form of artwork incorporates at least one element and or principle. We did many pieces of work in class to show our understanding for art. The main project was the accordion book project. He we created an abstract artwork and applied various element and principles. Next through writing we developed a poem to show what the elements and principles mean to us. So, at first I doubts about this class, but now I can truly say I am proud I'm in this class and we deeply admired the things I learned from years to come.

Making the accordin book was truly an extrodinary experience. At first when this project, I felt as if I would failed, probably the reason why I thought this way was, because I didn't really have an understanding of how to incorporate the elements and principles correctly. Though throughout the process of making the book I then learned to proper way to incorporate the elements and principles. I am still having mix feelings on my book, but overall I am happy of how I pace my time abd throughly completed the book. Next time though I would try to use an array of color that corresponds to the color wheel.

I found this handmade book interesting, because this book is made out of polymer clay.  Not paper, but clay. You also see that the covers of this book appears to display texture, as you can see it may resemble wood. .The lines seems to arrange in a way that gives a sense of pattern. The best thing though is the black hole near the opening of the book that acts as a distachment of a door knob missing this seems kind of cool, because it shows that the artwork is not completely perfect and shows "creative flaws".

Blatt, Gloria    Sunsets Go By

In this painting Gloria Blatt corporates various element and primciples. The main elements she incorporates is line and shapes. She places dark lines on various parts of the painting to show how the vivid color of the dark stands out on different bright colors. In my opnion she probably did this to demonstrate how darkness is following over the sun, becuase if you notice no dark lines are place upon the shape that appears to be the moon .The artist also incorporates some principles. The ones that seem to stand out the most is balance,unity, and emphasis. The main type of balance in my opion is symmetrical balance due to the fact that all parts of the painting are similar in size and the shapes seem to be the same size. Emphasis and unity is place upon the dark black lines and the golden suns. The artists in my opnion is trying to convey that although darkeness is falling over the sun at sunsee there are still some form of light being emitted by the sun. That is why the black lines are not completely covering the suns.


Questions: 1. Why do you incorpaorate 3 suns and one moon?
                 2. Why are the suns in 3 different positions?
                 3. Why do you place the moon in the middle, should't be at the end to show sequence of the events when the sun sets forth down into the horizon?

In this painting the painter is using various forms of elements and principles of art to convey his experssion. The elements that I see the author use is line and shape. You can see the artist use the element of line to distinguish the ripple effect of the water. This then brings out the principle of movement, because the lines made by the artist seem to make the water move. Another element the artist exprees is the element of  shape. The shape the artist expresses most is triangles. If you look closely you can see that the shape of the mountains in the background seem to show another element, which is form. The mountains seem to be 3-D.  The final prinicple the artist seems to proclaim is proportion. The boats seem that they can be the same sizes, but because they areach spaced out in between them, the closer they to the viewer from th picture the bigger, but the ones nearear to the back seems to be smaller in shape.

Saint George Struggling with the Dragon

The Italin painter Raphael "Saint George Struggling with the Dragon" is a painting that describes and appends to the hagiography(study of a saint) of Saint George. The paiting is based upon amere legend of a story during medievial times and brought back to life during the Renassiance. The story is reallu quite simple. A dragon is sent to terrioze a village, so the villagers give him food in return to stop causing chaos upon them. Though the dragon continues unless food isn't given to him. Pretty soon the villagers then give the dragons their childrenone food becomes scares and this was through the form of a lottery. One day the emperor daughter is chossen in a lottery. the king pleads to the people that offer one of their own in return for riches. They just kinly reject his offer. The daughter was then sent to a bridge to be fed to the dragon, but on the way their Saint George occurs. He then promised the slay the dragon and rid of this chaos only if the people get baptized in the name of the lord. Once they did this he forcefully slays the dragon. 

 My opinion on the legend is that the people may have benn wicked in heart. I mean the adults gave up their children in behalf of their lives and so then the dragon respresenting the Devil was sent upon them. The people were then at the mercy of his hand, even the king himself. The Saint, basically a missonary, feels sorry for them and the princess and basically and slyly gets people to join his religion through the sense of reliving their sorrow. So now the great dragon is slayed and the whole town becomes Christian. The author is basically saying that in order to get away from chaos bestiwed upon the wicked you must condsent to become a Christian and person of God. The time of when this was written is very easy to interpret, because Christianity played a major role in Europe at the time, especially in the sense of the Crusades.

1)  Why do Raphael create his own painting of this legend?
2) Is the Dragon really represetation of a wicked being or spirit?
3) Does this painting really spread and benefits of becoming a Christian?

Race and Gender Critcism

  Gender and race has always been a critical topic in many aspects. Not just in terms of just jobs,  education, and government, but also in the aspects of art. Not everybody in past history has been given the chance to display their work of art in muesum or galleries. Women and people of color has been on the other, non- noiticng end when it comes to who's art gets displayed in muesums. The article clearly stated that in 1997 at a show of contemporary art at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City included only 4 woman artists. There were 3 white women and one woman of color. The show exibit 72 artists artwork, but no artwork of men of color. Many people may think has oonly been a problem, but you can clearly see that this has recently happened. So has time go on I can truly hope that all forms of artwork that are from different types of people will be displayed or at least have a chanced to be in gallery.

Question:
-Why are women so marginlized when it comes to art?
-Why are the leaders of such museums not displaying other forms of art, yet they express that that is their main mission statement?

First Art Experience

  My first art experience was rather fun and exciting, yet very discomforting. When i was young, probably aorund the age of 3, i would always go over my cousins house. Now my cousins was in 1st grade, so he is quite a little bit older than me. My cousin loves art and will always have a 24 pack of crayons. I, however,  was still too young and was not allowed to use crayons, unless supervised. When no one was around I decided to become a little mischevious. I stole my cousin's crayons and then  decided, since there was no paper around, to express my motivation of art on the wall. My cousin was very furious when finding out. He though was placed upon the most trouble, because he should've beeen watching me. So, I got off easily.
